An early start buys you a full evening
Because pickup is at first light, the coach is usually back in Rio only after dark — but that still leaves the evening itself free on the day before or after, if you plan around it rather than treating this excursion as a half-day. Booking it for a day with nothing else on either side is the simplest approach on a trip this long, rather than trying to stack an evening plan on top of a return that may run later than scheduled.
Rio's landmarks, on a different day
Corcovado and Christ the Redeemer, Sugarloaf Mountain, Santa Teresa and the city's beaches are all better paired with a day that isn't already spoken for by a highway drive each way. Trying to fit Corcovado in in the hours after this excursion gets back is a recipe for missing the last cable car or queueing in fading light — give the city's landmarks their own day rather than squeezing them into this one's edges.
An evening out, if the timing allows
If the coach does get back with daylight or early evening to spare, Rio's evening options — a samba night, a dinner show — are a realistic pairing, particularly for a booking on the later end of the group's return estimate rather than the earlier one. Build in a buffer before committing to a fixed-time show on the same night as this excursion; a delayed coach and a hard curtain time don't mix well.
Other day trips out of Rio
Ilha Grande isn't the only excursion that takes visitors out of the city for a full day — Petrópolis and the imperial history of the mountains, or a Rio de Janeiro state beach day closer to the city, cover different ground without the same road time. Compare the return time and the road distance on any day trip you're considering back to back with this one; two long-transfer days in a row wears a short Rio stay down fast.
Building the rest of a short Rio trip
For a stay of four or five days, one day given entirely to Angra dos Reis and Ilha Grande, one to the city's landmarks, one to the beaches and neighbourhoods on foot, and an evening or two kept free for whatever the weather and the group's energy allow is a workable shape. Treat this excursion as the one day that has to be booked and planned around — fixed pickup time, fixed return — and let the rest of the trip flex around it rather than the other way round.
